Anti-Depressants And Driving Don't Mix, New Study Finds

People who are depressed and taking prescription antidepressants are poor drivers, new study suggests. A team of researchers from the University of North Dakota put 60 people through a driving simulation to test steering, concentration and reactions.

Thirty-one of the participants were taking at least one type of antidepressant while 29 control group members were taking no medication with the exception of oral contraceptives in some cases

Antidepressants Pose Low Risk To Newborns, New Study Says

Two recent studies have revealed that women who take antidepressants early in their pregnancy have little or no risk of giving birth to babies born with birth defects. Researchers in these latest rounds of studies focused on the class of drugs chosen most often for depression and anxiety, including the brands Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft.

Contrary to the new findings, Paxil carries a warning of possible heart defects in newborns, and experts don't expect the new findings to alter any of these warnings

Court Upholds Conviction Of South Carolina Teen Who On Zoloft Killed Grandparents

The murder conviction of the South Carolina teen who claimed taking Zoloft made him shoot his sleeping grandparents and then torch their home was upheld on Monday by the South Carolina Supreme Court. Christopher Pittman was 12-years-old when he used a pump-action shotgun to kill his grandparents Joe and Joy Pittman in their Chester County home.

His defense attorneys had argued unsuccessfully that antidepressants led him to commit the crimes and that he was involuntarily intoxicated by them and therefore didn't know right from wrong. His attorneys said the trial judge used the wrong standard for jurors to determine involuntary intoxication. His attorneys had also argued that he was denied a speedy trial by before being sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2005 when he was 15

FDA Proposes New Anti-Depressant Drug Warning For Suicidal Thoughts In Young Adults

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday proposed that the manufacturers of anti-depressant drugs should include a suicide warning on all anti-depressant medication labels for adults aged 18-24, who are considered at an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior after consuming the drugs.

The FDA said the labels, which already include similar warnings for children and adolescents, should also warn young-adult consumers about a risk of developing suicidal thoughts during initial treatment, generally in the first one to two months
