Doctors performed an emergency caesarean operation after the woman came to the hospital August 19 with head and neck pain.
Officials say she suffered a tear in her aorta that would have taken her life within 48-hours.
Stony Brook University Hospital quickly assembled two surgical teams - one to deliver the babies and the other to perform open heart surgery.
While the mother is reportedly recovering at home, the babies were premature at 31 weeks and will remain in the hospital's neo-natal care unit for another month.
