The smoky haze covering many parts of California due to the 1,500 simultaneous fires has caused a spike in doctor visits in the state. Most of the patients in doctor's waiting rooms are residents who have difficulty breathing because of the soot.

Aside from breathing problems, other common complaints of patients include sore throats, itchy eyes and sniffles, according to Kevin Hamilton, a respiratory therapist at the Sequoia Community Health Center in Fresno.

For residents who also have financial woes aside from health concerns, healthmobiles have been fielded by different groups to provide free medical care to California residents who could no longer afford visits to a private physician. The main aim of the medical clinic on wheels is to provide free preventive care through early detection of symptoms of ailments before it becomes chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma and hypertension.

Meanwhile, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday deployed 200 National Guard troops to battle the over 1,000 blazes across the state and replace weary firefighters who have been at the forefront for over 10 days.
