The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday expressed alarm over the failure of most developing countries to adopt safety measures and technologies on the proper use of needles.

The organization reported that about 6 billion injections are given worldwide with syringes or needles that are used without sterilization.

"The new technologies should be available to developing countries, where injections are used more and where the risk of infection transmission is greater," said Dr. Howard Zucker, WHO assistant director-general for health technology and pharmaceuticals in an interview with Xinhua News.

WHO spearheaded a three-day meeting beginning Wednesday to tackle the safety measures and features of needles.

Outline of topics for discussion include policies on procurement of safest needles and guide to manufacturers on how to meet the global demands for affordable but quality syringes. Highlight of the event would be the experts meeting on injection safety.
