The United Nations (UN) World Health Organization (WHO) announced and welcomed the drug manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories' decision to lower the price of the "second line" of defense drug used to treat people in low and middle-income countries with HIV/AIDS.

This particular drug therapy treatment has been proven effective for many people suffering from HIV/AIDS who have developed a resistance to the "first-line" drugs.

The decision made by Abbott to reduce their prices on this drug will help those who cannot afford it.

The demand has increased for the need of this "second-line" treatment as the number of people who are unable to afford it continues to grow worldwide.

The WHO stated that as Abbott made the decision to reduce their costs, the WHO "would continue to work with countries, people living with HIV/AIDS, organizations and the pharmaceutical industry 'to find mechanisms that address the immediate need to rapidly increase access and affordability of life-saving drugs, while maintaining the long-term need to foster research and development in innovative medicines.' "

The "WHO has pledged to work toward universal access to HIV prevention services and to treatment and care for people living with HIV/AIDS, all by 2010," according to the UN News press release.
