 Waste Information - November 23, 2008
| Residents of Port Arthur in Texas are up in arms over plans by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to allow the operators of the Port Arthur incinerator to bring in 20,000 tons of toxic waste from Mexico. The unwanted items are mostly PCBs. A 30-year old law which prohibited the manufacture of polychlorinated biphenyls was cited by residents opposed to the petition of Veolia Environment Services to allow the toxic items in for burning | | Some AIDS expert have recently said that condoms and testing for HIV are not the solution to eliminating the disease in Africa and are just a waste of money, while others say that doing those things has helped but there is a need to do more. An estimated 22.5 million people in Africa had HIV at the end of 2007. Health experts say about 1.7 million new people became sick with HIV last year while the disease killed 1.6 million people during the same period | | A new study shows a statistically significant link between industrial release of mercury and increased rates of autism in children at a time when more Americans are using compact fluorescent light bulbs that can release mercury if thrown in the trash instead of being carefully recycled. The study published in the journal Health & Place by researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, showed that there is a statistically significant association between autism risk and the distance from a mercury source. It is the first time such a link has been published in scientific literature | | The federal government is deciding whether it will continue to fund abstinence only education in schools since the CDC released findings this year that one in four girls has a sexually transmitted disease. Another reason some feel abstinence only programs do not work is that the U.S has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in developed countries, at about 750,000 a year | | Health officials said Wednesday that Japan has stopped imports of buffalo mozzarella made from Italy after high levels of dioxin, known to increase the likelihood of cancer, were reported in the cheese. Italian authorities are investigating whether feed given to buffalo herds around the city of Naples was contaminated, possibly made by Naples Mafia or Camorra involved in illegal waste disposal | |
