Last month, Massachusetts ordered the retailer to stock the so-called Plan B pill. Illinois also requires pharmacies to carry it. Those are the only two states so far where Wal-Mart stocks it.
A company official says Wal-Mart expects more states to require the company to sell the pill. Because of that, and the fact that it's FDA approved, Wal-Mart is changing its policy.
However the company says it will maintain its conscientious objection policy, except where it is banned. The policy allows any Wal-Mart or Sam's Club pharmacy employee who does not feel comfortable dispensing a prescription to refer customers to another pharmacist or pharmacy.
