The company is also planning to sell prescription birth control drugs for $9, which is almost one third of regular prices. Wal-Mart will offer a monthly supply of prescription Ortho Cyclen and Ortho Tri Cyclen as part of its new effort to bring down prices.
"We have taken what we do best, working with suppliers, driving costs out of the supply chain and passing those savings to our customers. Now we're applying that to health care," Wal-Mart Chief Operating Officer Bill Simon said.
The $4 generics program was launched by the company last year. "The first phase of the program has exceeded all our expectations," Simon added.
Additionally, the retailer will sell Glaxo's Coreg (a blood pressure drug) and Novartis' (anti-fungal Lamisil) under its $4 program. The branded version of the drugs sell for $119 and $330, respectively.
