A recommendation by the Canadian Cancer Society that Vitamin D could help prevent cancer has caused some pharmacies to be completely sold out of the supplement.

An American study found that people who lived in Northern climates did not get enough Vitamin D and that taking supplements can reduce the risk of some cancers by 50 percent or more.

After the Canadian Cancer Society issued its recommendation, health food stores and pharmacies in Charlottetown and Montreal reported that they were sold out of the vitamin.

The randomized study, which followed 1179 post-menopausal women in eastern Nebraska, showed that those who took Vitamin D and calcium had a 60 percent lower risk for many cancers including breast, lung and colon cancer, compared to those who didn't take any supplements.
