One In 5 Violent Crimes Committed By People With Mental Illness

According to a new study that examined data from 1998 to 2000, about one in 20 violent crimes or 45 violent crimes per 1,000 inhabitants are committed by people with psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia or manic depression. Mental health advocates are split over whether this is a high or low percentage -some say that people with serious psychiatric disorders as significantly contributing to the amount of violent crime in society, while others say that the study shows that the widely held prejudices against people with mental illness are unwarranted and unfair.

Michael Howlett, director of the Zito Trust, told BBC News, "This is a very high figure. And I think it is an under-estimate, which does not include those people with personality disorders who commit crimes.

He does add, however, that most people with mental illnesses do not commit violent crimes
