An upsurge of violence in Somalia has forced the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to suspend airlifts of food and aid.

The U.N. has also evacuated all its international staff from Somalia as the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) battles the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC).

International relief workers have been helping civilians recover from a series of devastating floods.

According to the WFP, the organization "hopes to resume all its air operations using airdrops and helicopters and its humanitarian passenger and cargo services in Somalia as soon as possible and is in contact with authorities on the ground in an attempt to achieve this."

The U.N. confirms that the airdrops on Sunday and Monday by an Antonov-12, flying out Kenya, were the first by WFP in Somalia since 1998 when floods submerged much of the region.
