Vietnam has announced on Tuesday it will host its first-ever stem cell bank and will be launched on the last week of April in southern Ho Chi Minh City.

A leading local scientist said Vietnam will establish a repository for stem cells from umbilical cord blood and umbilical cord membrane for the treatment of fatal diseases.

The stem cell bank is a joint project of Vietnam's Mekophar Chemical Pharmaceutical Co. and Singapore's Cord Labs Co

The laboratory can store up to 3,600 samples of umbilical cords.

The bank aims to get samples from newborn babies without HIV and hepatitis B diseases.

Vietnamese scientist Phan Toan Thang said in the next two years, unspecialized cells can be used to treat skin diseases and injuries caused by burns and diabetes and other diseases.
