Austrian activists trying to clear Vienna's streets of unhealthy and unsanitary dog droppings, and are urging residents to record every dropping they see in the space of five minutes.

The impromptu figures thereafter will be compiled and presented to city officials as a census, further pressurizing them to deal with the problem.

The move is an extension of group's earlier efforts to clean up Vienna of annoying droppings. In May, activists collected 157,000 signatures on a petition demanding that the city launch some kind of cleanup program and toughen penalties for dog owners who don't clean up after their pets.

However, no action as taken by the city administration, who had promised to begin cleaning work in Summer and later pushed it back to Fall.

Petra Jens, a spokeswoman for the cleanup campaign, tells Austrian television that the information provided by residents would help determine what parts of Vienna are most soiled by dogs and provide an overview of just how many droppings are out there on any given day.
