A South Florida veterinarian plans to aid pets left behind by their owners amid the devastation Hurricane Katrina.

Dr. Bob Buzzetti will lead a small team to New Orleans next week, supplied with donated trucks, cages, food and water.

Upon their arrival, the team will partner with the local Humane Society shelter in order to try and give abandoned animals a fresh start in South Florida.

Says Buzzetti, "It's not like we will go in boats through New Orleans. We will be at the shelter, where they have 800 animals, and look for ones we can bring back."

After thorough check-ups, Buzzetti hopes to return to South Florida with 100 to 150 pets.

Once in South Florida, the animals, mostly dogs, will go to the local Humane Society and arrangements will be made for foster care. If the animals' original owners cannot be found at that time, the foster owners will be given the opportunity to adopt the animals.
