Under federal regulations sick animals that are unable to stand and walk on their own are not supposed to be slaughtered and used for human consumption.
According to reports one United States Department of Agriculture food inspector and at least one supervisor were suspended and sent home with pay, pending the outcome of an investigation.
After the video was released the USDA recalled 143 million pounds of beef from Westland/Hallmark Meat Co.'s plant in Chino, California. Most of the beef had been sold to school lunch programs across the country and much of it had already been consumed.
