The report, issued Thursday, says the CDC hopes to reduce the incidence of food poisoning by 2010.
"Food safety is a continuing problem that starts at the farm and continues through the food chain all the way to the kitchen," said Dr. Robert Tauxe, deputy director of CDC's Division of Foodborne, Bacterial and Mycotic Disease, as reported on WebMD.com.
In 2007, U.S. had an outbreaks of Salmonella poisonings linked to peanut butter and frozen pot pies. The overall rate was around 15 for every 100,000 people.
Consumers have to do their part in preventing food-borne infections by cooking their food well and avoiding eating raw food, Tauxe added.
This 2007 FoodNet report appears in the April 11 issue of the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
