The first vaccine for cervical cancer is approved by the US.

Cervical cancer afflicts 290,000 women a year globally.

To be manufactured by Merck & Co., Gardasil will be administered to girls and women from the ages of nine to 26.

Gardasil combats the human papillomavirus (HPV).

"This vaccine is a significant advance in the protection of women's health," said Andrew von Eschenbach, acting Food and Drug Administration commissioner, according to the BBC.

The full six-month treatment will cost about $360.
