The latest fatality was a woman from Cengkarang in western part of Jakarta, who died Tuesday after being admitted in the hospital for six days. She was tested positive of H5N1 strain, according to the country's Ministry of Health.
"The woman bought a live chicken in the market and slaughtered the chicken there before taking it home. But we're still investigating the cause as a team is heading to the neighborhood today," said Joko Suyono , an official of the ministry's avian flu center in a report by Xinhua News.
Health experts earlier warned that Indonesia could be a potential hotspot for the spread of avian influenza virus or bird flu pandemic being a home to many backyard chickens and poultry.
In a separate report, WHO also raised the possibility of limited human to human transmission of the disease following the death of two of five brothers in Islamabad, Pakistan, who were also tested positive of H5N1 strain.
Latest statistics from the organization showed that since 2003, a total of 340 people in 13 countries have contracted the virus.
