On Sunday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of 4,890 pounds of Home Made and Stop and Shop tuna salad brands as there was a chance for it to be contaminated with Listeria.
The recalled lot consisted of packages with the expiration date of Aug. 19 and involves 5-pound units of "Home Made Brand Foods Tuna Salad," and both 10-pound and 12-ounce units of "Stop and Shop Tuna Salad."
No cases of infections have been reported yet, company officials said. The symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection include fever, headaches and nausea, similar to symptoms of the flu. In severe cases the bacteria can cause the death of people with weak immune systems and lead to miscarriages.
The tuna salad was distributed to stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and New Jersey. Consumers may return the recalled salad to the place of purchase.
