An experimental vaccine has been put to the test by U.S. students in Mexico and Guatemala to cure traveler's diarrhea, scientists reported Friday.

The vaccine is an important development as scientist have long thought that advising travelers to avoid risky food and water was the only way to avoid the germs that cause traveler's diarrhea. United Nation officials detailed the plan today at an international wildlife conference in Kenya. They say the pilot project could get started in six months and be fully operational in two years.

At least 130 people have contracted bird flu in Asia since the current outbreak began in 2003 and 67 have died, according to figures from the United Nations health agency. Those infections have occurred almost exclusively among people who have had some documented contact with chickens. Health officials are concerned the virus will sweep across the world if it mutates into a form that can spread easily from human to human
