Research Links Heart Surgery Drug To Dramatic Rise In Mortality Rate

An international study has found that the drug aprotinin, extensively used to prevent excessive bleeding during heart surgery, hastens the risk of dying within five years of the procedure by nearly 50 percent.

Researchers are suggesting replacing the drug sold by Bayer AG under the brand name Trasylol with some other, cheaper medications for a year. The replacement is expected to prevent 10,000 deaths worldwide over the next five years.
