A doctor tasked to take care of the city's health in the Philippine capital of Manila, was arrested Wednesday by law enforcement authorities for allegedly harming the same people she swore to take care of by performing illegal abortions.

The National Bureau of Investigation in the Philippines accused 64-year-old Teresita Ventura, Medical Officer at the Manila City Hall health department of conducting abortions in her residence.

Ventura was arrested in a sting operation using an underground NBI agent. She was charged for violating Article 259 (abortion practiced by a physician) and 212 (corruption of public officials).

Her husband, Manuel was also arrested later after allegedly offering over $2,000 in bribery money to the arresting officers in exchange for the release of his wife. Manuel was also charged with corruption of public officials.

Police said they received information that Ventura was allegedly performing abortion operations in her residence also in the capital.

The NBI then positioned one of its officers as a pregnant woman needing an abortion and approached Ventura. Ventura allegedly agreed to carry out the operation for a fee of $220.

Ventura denies the charge and told investigators she was just facilitating the woman's request to take abortion pills.
