Cancer Immunotherapy Saves Life Of Advanced Meloma Patient

Doctors have successfully saved the life of an advanced skin cancer patient by treating him with clones of his own immune cells. The 52-year-old man from a small town in Oregon was declared free of melanoma two years after treatment.

Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle who treated the dying patient extracted white blood cells, the key component of the immune system, and grew the infection-fighting T cells in the laboratory. The cloned T cells, which had been vastly expanded, were then reinfused to the patient to fight the cancer

By April, Wal-Mart will include in its stores medical services as it opens in-store health clinics under its trademark. The Clinic at Wal-Mart, a joint venture with local hospitals in Atlanta, Dallas and Little Rock, will soon offer routine medical service for health concerns like colds, bladder infections and sunburn. It will be run by nurses or doctor's assistants.

Clinics had long existed in Wal-Mart stores operated by independent medical practitioners in leased spaces. Clinics in shopping malls have gained popularity over the years with 7 percent of Americans having tried the services of such outlets, the Convenient Care Association said

As the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) readies itself to introduce new rules on sunscreens, strong new evidence suggests overall sun exposure in childhood is most likely to develop into deadly skin cancer later in life. The news comes as the government is finishing long-awaited rules to improve sunscreens.

"SunSafe In The Middle School Years" Education Can Help Prevent Skin Cancer

"SunSafe in the Middle School Years" was a middle school research project conducted to improve awareness and educate teenagers about the prevention of skin cancer and the need for sun protection. The research study has been published in the January issue of "Pediatrics."

The study provided a two-year follow-up period indicating that teens who participated in the program were much better about using sun protection devices than those teens who had not participated in the program
