| A major new study shows that, contrary to recent controversy that antidepressants may increase risk of suicide in users, antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have prevented thousands of suicides since they were introduced in 1988. Dr. Julio Licino, chairman of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Miami Miller school of Medicine says, "As the number of [SSRI] prescriptions go up, the number of suicides go down | | A Scottish executive is backing an online game recently released, which supposedly aids men's mental health by inspiring them to get in touch with their feelings. The fantasy game is Scotland against Brazil in the World Cup | | Despite economic recovery in the country, a recent government survey reveals a record number of Japanese became seriously ill or died due to overwork in 2005. Some 330 workers fell severely ill or died because of overwork, while suicides topped 30,000 for an eighth straight year | | Maker of the antidepressant drug Paxil is warning doctors that the drug appears to increase the risk of suicide attempts in young adults. GlaxoSmithKline writes in a letter that it analyzed clinical trials involving 15,000 people | | A Royal College of Physicians poll of 5,000 leading doctors found 73 percent are opposed to a change in legislation which would allow patients the right to die. The House of Lords will debate the assisted-dying Bill on Thursday, which would make it legal to doctors to prescribe lethal drugs to the terminally ill | |
