The study was released by the World Cancer Research Fund, which has undertaken the largest study to date into the connection between lifestyle and cancer.
According to the study, body fat is a key factor in the development of cancer and much more significant than earlier thought.
It recommended that in order to cut the risk of developing cancer, adults should not gain weight, avoid sugary drinks and alcohol, and refrain from eating bacon or ham.
In an earlier study, it was found that fat tissue may be preventing the death of damaged cells and thus increasing cancer risk.
The previous study was undertaken by by Allan Conney and colleagues at the Rutgers University in New Jersey.
