According to Pennsylvania researchers, nicotine affects the brain through the same method as heroin and other opiate drugs.

Dr. Julie A. Blendy, and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia revealed this fact after carrying an experiment on mice.

They have placed nicotine-addicted mice in the same cage where they had received nicotine before.

When the mice were given nicotine, the mice receive the same signals. The experiment proves certain signals strengthen addiction.

The research revealed that that nicotine influences the brain the same way activated by heroin and other opiate drugs.

According to a report from the Associated Press, the mice that were given nicotine showed a rise in levels of a protein called 'CREB.'

This protein is said to be involved in the brain's response to many drugs of abuse.
