Pre-eclampsia is a condition that occurs during pregnancy which causes high blood pressure and can affect the kidneys, liver, brain and placenta. It can cause problems with the placenta by reducing the amount of oxygen the foetus receives | | Fasting for two days before chemotherapy can make it more effective and produce fewer side effects by shielding healthy cells as it destroys the malignant cells, new research suggests. The finding, which stems from test-tube work and experiments with yeast and mice, is part of a broad effort to explore ways to reduce the collateral damage that chemotherapy typically produces | | British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said in a press conference Tuesday he favors the reclassification of cannabis to a class B drug instead of its present class C status. The move would reverse cannabis' downgrade by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, which was seen as having encouraged its heavier use by young Britons. Brown's policy comes ahead of a report slated to come out this month following a formal review of cannabis' classification ordered by the prime minister on June as soon as he took office | | The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is working with the drug company Merck to investigate a possible link between Merck's asthma and allergy drug Singulair and suicide risk associated with it. Meanwhile, "patients should not stop taking Singulair before talking to their doctor," the FDA said in a statement, adding that doctors should monitor patients for suicidal behavior and mood changes. The federal agency said that the investigation may take nine months. Currently there is no proof that Singulair can lead to mood changes, suicidal behavior and suicide in patients | | The World Health Organization is marking World Tuberculosis Day Monday (March 24), calling on individuals to work on the elimination of the roots of the tuberculosis epidemic to fight the disease. An estimated 1.5 million people died from tuberculosis in 2006 and a report in the New England Journal of Medicine says.
