U.S. researchers discovered that some of the natural personal care products on the market that are labeled 100 percent "natural" or "organic," such as shampoos, soaps, and other similar products contain 1,4-dioxane, a chemical that increases the risk for cancer, the Organic Consumer Association reports.

According to the study, the petrochemical appears as a byproduct of manufacturing. This chemical thought to be responsible for cancer and could also be a kidney neurotoxicant and respiratory toxicant.

Out of 100 products tested, 47 had detectable levels of 1,4-dioxane, a probable human carcinogen.

The state recommends that products that have more than 30 parts per million of 1,4-dioxane should have a warning level indicating that the contents may cause cancer. Organic Consumers Association found that the amounts in a natural dish liquid went as high as 97.1 parts per million.

Organic Consumers Association presented a list of ingredients consumers should watch out for: "myreth," "oleth," "laureth," "ceteareth," any other "eth," "PEG," "polyethylene," "polyethylene glycol," "polyoxyethylene," or "oxynol."
