Group Backs Bill Phasing Out Use Of Antibiotics In Animal Feed

A coalition of health, consumer, agricultural, environmental, humane and other advocacy groups is calling for the passage of a law banning the use of antibiotics in animal feeds to prevent the emergence of drug-resistant bacterial diseases.

The Chicago-based Keep Antibiotics Working (KAW) is backing the "Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act" (PAMTA) of Edward Kennedy, D-Mass, and Olympia Snow, R-Maine. The bill phases out in two years antibiotics for humans used to primarily promote the growth of pigs, sheep, chicken and cattle

Washing Hands Can Save Lives In Developing Nations

A researcher in Nigeria says that simple hand washing can save lives in Africa and could reduce the incidence of diarrhea by up to 30 percent. That would place the value of hand washing as about equal to access to clean water in cutting diarrhea infections, the researcher said.

Researchers, led by Regina Ejemot of the University of Caliber, in Nigeria reviewed the results of 14 studies of hygiene promotion practices in institutions, community organizations and homes involving more than 8,000 people

Ground Beef Products Found Contaminated With A Strain Of Salmonella Newport

Supermarket operator Safeway Inc.on Thursday announced that it has received a notice from the U.S. Department of Agriculture warning it may have received raw ground beef products affected with a strain of Salmonella Newport.

The USDA has suggested the consumers to discard the ground beef products purchased between September 19 and November 5 from any of the stores owned by Safeway Inc

Singapore Confectionery, Bakery Chain Shuts Down After Food Poisoning Outbreak

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) of Singapore on Tuesday ordered a confectionery to shut down after customers who ate a cake made by the factory suffered food poisoning.

The factory, Prima Food, also decided to voluntarily close its 39 Prima Deli bakeries islandwide for one week starting on Wednesday. One outlet sold a chocolate cake contaminated with salmonella bacteria to one of the victims of the food poisoning
