 Safety Information - August 8, 2008
| The Food and Drug Administration is very close to finalizing new suicide warnings for 11 anti-seizure medications after research showed they increased patients' risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior. In addition to treating epilepsy, the anti-seizure medications are also used for a variety of other illnesses, including migraines, certain nerve-pain disorders, and psychiatric diseases such as bipolar disorder that themselves carry a risk of suicide | | The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has started a safety review of several drugs known as tumor necrosis factor, or TNF, blockers for a possible association with development of lymphoma and other cancers in children and young adults. The agency said the drugs, Enbrel, Humira and Remicade, are widely prescribed to treat autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease | | While complaints against physicians keep on rising in the Big Apple, New York state's Office of Professional Medical Conduct has penalized fewer doctors in 2007, an 11-year record low. An 18-page report by the New York Public Interest Research Group and the Center for Medical Consumers attributed the dip in disciplinary measures to the OPMC's high rate of using a nondisciplinary monitoring system. The report's authors branded the state's physician disciplinary system as one of America's most pro-doctor systems | | The anti-smoking drug Chantix was removed by the Federal Aviation Administration from the list of medications deemed safe for pilots and air traffic controllers. The FAA ban followed a public health advisory issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that contained a five-point safety guide on the severe changes in mood and behavior persons taking Chantix may go through | | The first phase of a safety improvement program and campaign to promote a culture of respect is set to be implemented across Toronto by fall. For its initial salvo, the city allocated $4 million to fund the purchase of high-tech and larger volume of security cameras, more police presence in schools and programs that would improve dealing with sexual assault cases | |
