The research reveals women whose capacity is under 85-percent of what it should be are likely to die within eight years. The findings have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine
Primarily, the exercise guidelines are based on men. There has been uncertainty on whether they are viable for women. The latest research is expected to streamline the fitness regime for women.
To judge the fitness level of women, the researchers have used the results of 5,721 exercise stress tests on women over age 35.
Study leader, Dr. Martha Gulati - a Chicago cardiologist says, "In general, women's fitness levels seem to be lower regardless of her age than for men."
Research finds women lose about 1-percent of their exercise capacity per year.
Gulati says, "Given that we live longer, it just emphasizes the importance of fitness for women."
