While this type of news is nothing new to the health world, a recent study shows that smoking can harm a key lung enzyme that helps regulate blood pressure, according to the BBC.

The study was conducted by the government's Brookhaven National Laboratory and appears in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

Lead researcher Dr. Joanna Fowler says, "The effects of smoking on human health are enormous; yet, little is known about the pharmacological effects of smoking on the human body apart from the effects of nicotine."

Despite growing concerns and available information about smoking, there is still a high rate of smokers among the world's population.
