The Center for Disease Control has indicated that, for the first time in 30 years, only one in five American women are smoking.

The report yielded positive results showing that in 2003, 21.6% of U.S. adults smoked, a drop from the 22.5% recorded in 2002. The CDC also found that 2003 had the lowest proportion of smokers, aged 18 to 24 (23.9%), since 1991.

The report also indicated that in 2003 the number of Americans who quit smoking (46 million) was higher than those who still smoked (45 million).

In general, the report showed that smoking increasingly declines year after year. The goal of the U.S is to bring smoking down to 12.5%, (one in eight adults), by 2010.
