Reckitt Benckiser PLC decides to acquire the consumer healthcare division of Boots Group PLC for 1.9 billion pounds or $3.4 billion.

Boots also announced a merger with Alliance Unichem PLC. It puts up the Healthcare business up for sale in April, as it wants to focus on the performance of its 1,400 U.K. outlets.

Reckitt Benckiser Chief Executive Bart Becht says that the agreement will add "three power brands" to the company's range i.e. Nurofen in analgesics, Strepsils in sore throat medicines and Clearasil in anti-acne treatment.

"All three brands are already global leaders and have substantial further growth potential," The Associated Press quoted Becht as saying.

Reckitt Benckiser's chief businesses are household cleaning products. However, it owns healthcare brands such as Lemsip that generate about 15 percent of the company's revenues.
