| September 10 is suicide prevention day. A study from the Center for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) says there is a connection between alcohol and suicide. High levels of alcohol intake are associated to increased rates of suicide. This explains the cause-and-effect relationship between the amount of alcohol consumed and the rate of suicides in the population. Robert Mann, senior scientist at CAMH led the study, which looked at "alcohol-related factors" affecting suicide mortality figures in Ontario | | According to a report on Tuesday from Trust for America's Health (TFAH), a non-profit, non-partisan advocacy group for the priority of national health and prevention, obesity rates are still rising in 31 states. Some of the obesity rates in the other states have remained the same, and none of the states have been successful in lowering their rates. The TFAH report claims that efforts made by government policies continue to fail to meet the crisis of obesity among Americans | | Experts attending the 10th International Congress on Obesity in Sydney, Australia said on Sunday that affluence in Western countries has made the problem of obesity a global pandemic and is now the greatest single contributor to chronic disease. Paul Zimmet, professor at Australia's Monash University said, "This insidious, creeping pandemic of obesity is now engulfing the entire world | | College policies barring suicidal students from staying in campus dorms are coming under attack. Such policies have become commonplace on some campuses recently. Hunter College of New York recently announced that its abandoning its 3-year-old policy as part of a legal settlement with a student. The student sued after she was kicked out of the dorm in 2004. She claimed her eviction violated anti-discrimination laws. The college also agreed to pay her $65,000 | | The Food and Drug Administration announces it is creating a task force on human cell and tissue safety.
