An Arkansas woman has filed a filed a federal lawsuit against the Connecticut-based company Playtex for making plastic baby bottles containing a dangerous chemical associated with serious health problems.

The lawsuit against Playtex confronts the present issues about the industrial chemical bisphenol A (BPA).

Concerns on the use of BPA were raised when it was found out that the chemical had negative effects on a rat during an experiment. There were changes in behavior and the brain, early puberty, and even precancerous changes in the prostate and breast.

Though the experiment was done on rats, it the possibility that the chemical would have similar effects on humans could not be disregarded, the National Toxicology Program in the U.S. said last month.

Some parents have already switched to glass bottles.

Over the past month in Canada, it has been stated that BPA, commonly found in plastic water bottles, DVDs, CDs and other items, imposes harm and may be banned in baby bottle manufacture.

A general statement by Playtex said the company still considers BPA safe.
