According to sources, the Food and Drug Administration will approve an application, probably on Thursday, that would make the contraceptive Plan B available over the counter to women aged 18 or older.

Although Barr Labs is yet to receive approval on the "morning-after pill," sources say that they have been told that expansion of the drug would be imminent.

Many social conservatives both in and outside Congress have tried to keep the drug off the market without a prescription.

Adding to that, many feel that it would encourage promiscuity, while others say it could trigger early abortions.

The morning after pill consists of an increased strength of common ingredients found in birth control pills. The two pills are taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex and can significantly reduce the chances of pregnancy. Women's advocate groups have pushed for over-the-counter-pills since they said it was difficult for women to get prescriptions quickly.
