A Philippine health official on Wednesday issued a nationwide warning on the danger of dengue fever. During the past nine months, 24,689 cases of the disease was recorded.

The head of the health department's National Epidemiology Center, Eric Tayag, warned that the number of dengue cases is expected to increase in September and October. He said the disease proliferates during the rainy season.

The health department also reported 4,000 cases of dengue fever in the second week of September, including 283 infected people who died from it.

GMANews.tv said that of the total number of dengue cases as of Sept. 22, 941 cases with eight deaths were recorded by private hospitals in the Caraga region in southern Philippines.

In the region, the province of Surigao del Sur suffered the most number of cases and deaths. There were 270 people infected with four deaths as of Sept. 22.

Another Caraga province, Agusan del Sur, had three deaths from 244 infections. The number of dengue cases in the other cities and provinces of Caraga are 243 in Butuan City, 71 in Agusan del Norte, 48 in Surigao City, 40 in Surigao del Norte, and 25 in Bislig.
