Three employees of pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer, are under arrest as a Nigerian court on Wednesday issued the warrants against them over their alleged involvement in illegal drug trade that killed 11 children in the region 11 years ago.

According to presiding judge Shehu Atiku, the trio whose names were withheld, had been earlier served summonses to appear before the court on November 6 but they failed to do so.

"Up till this moment none of them has appeared before this court either out of neglect, disrespect or contempt," Atiku said before issuing the arrest warrant as quoted by Xinhua News.

The case against the three staff stemmed in 1996, when 11 children died and 181 others were injured apparently after the trio tested on them the Pfizer's made antibiotic called Trovan.

However, Pfizer downplayed the allegations claiming that the victims were among the 12,000 children who died in the northern state of Kano due to meningitis outbreak at that time.

The northern state of Kano has lodged criminal charges against the company and is suing it in the amount of $2 billion in damages.
