 Ovarian Cancer Information - December 1, 2008
| London: A new study has found that Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), the menopause treatment for women, increases the risk of ovarian cancer. In 2002, the therapy was linked to breast cancer. The British study, the largest of its kind, states those on HRT are 20 percent more likely to develop ovarian cancer | | A new study has revealed that breast and ovarian cancer rates fall sharply for women who have stopped taking the Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) during menopause. The new study, which is published in the April 19 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, looked at the chances of breast cancer both before and after a study was published by the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) that found HRT can actually be more damaging to a woman's health | | New research reveals that a new drug called Gemzar, if administered to post-surgery patients of pancreatic cancer, may delay the relapse of this deadly disease by quite a few months. The Eli Lilly and Co. (LLY) chemotherapy drug Gemzar, or gemcitabine, if taken after surgery prolonged the lives of patients by 13.4 months without the relapse of cancer as compared to the non-receivers of the drug where the disease relapsed just after 6.9 months. Pancreatic cancer (also called cancer of the pancreas) is a malignant tumor within the pancreatic gland. Depending on the extent of the tumor at the time of diagnosis, the prognosis is generally regarded as poor, with few victims still alive 5 years after diagnosis. However complete healing is still extremely rare | | According to a report published in the American Journal of Public Health, Americans are not consuming enough folic acid, a B vitamin critical in preventing serious birth defects of the spinal cord and brain and may also protect against heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Despite the fact that the Food and Drug Administration mandated folic acid fortification in U.S. grain products such as enriched white rice in 1998 in an attempt to help prevent birth defects many are not getting enough of the life saving vitamin | | Scientists now say that a substance used for aborting pregnancies may be able to fight breast and ovarian cancer. Mifepristone or RU-486 blocks the sex-hormone, progesterone, which causes cancer cells to proliferate | |
