| The medical officer of the North Bay Parry Sound District warned of more Ontario residents becoming sick as she observed an E. Coli outbreak in the province. Over 50 people became sick after dining at the Harvey restaurant, 14 have been confirmed sick from the E. coli 0157:H7 bacteria, while another 38 are ailing. Health authorities are still determining the cause of their sickness | | The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a public health alert due to recent 32 salmonellosis poisoning cases in 12 states. The department said illness caused by Salmonella may be associated with raw, frozen, breaded and pre-browned, stuffed chicken entrees | | Three students at an eastern Pennsylvania high school are diagnosed with an outbreak of MRSA, a staph infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It is still not clear where the students from Northampton Area High School picked up the infection, Superintendent Linda Firestone told media adding that she has sent a letter to parents Wednesday urging good hygiene practices to prevent spreading the infection | | A formal investigation was launched following the listeriosis outbreak that has now claimed more than a dozen lives in Canada. CBC news reported that a day before the start of the federal election campaign, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that investigators should examine the factors that might have led to the outbreak, the effectiveness of federal agencies' response, and recommendations for prevention of future outbreaks | | Mexico has quietly agreed to stop shipments of beef and processed poultry to the United States after U.S. officials repeatedly raised concerns over the quality and safety of Mexican food. The action comes less than two months after U.S. Department of Agriculture officials finally traced a U.S. salmonella outbreak to shipments of fresh jalapenos and serranos peppers grown in Mexico. It is difficult to trace illness back to the contaminated source food that caused it, so before officials traced the outbreak to Mexican peppers, they warned people away from American tomatoes, costing U.S. farmers tens of millions of dollars | |
