The official Angola Press Agency said the new medicine is given with physiological solution of sodiumchloride and is less toxic than other treatments while able to cure in just 14 days.
Hospital manager identified only as Deolinda said the new drug, Difluoromethylornithine, has substituted Arsobol, which is considered toxic.
She said, "Arsobol, despite being toxic and causing collateral damages to patients, takes months to cure a patient."
Human African Trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness, is a vector-borne parasitic disease transmitted by the tsetse fly. It is fatal if left untreated, and an estimated 40,000 victims die every year.
