At least 15,000 children were feared to have been infected with the new outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease in China, which killed at least 28 children across the country.

The latest casualty was reported by the provincial health ministry saying that a 2-year-old child died of the disease after being in coma in southern Hunan province.

According to local news agency, Xinhua, 1,482 cases have been reported with symptoms of the disease and pre-schoolers were mostly infected.

Reports said that two kindergarten schools in the capital city of Beijing, were temporarily closed down Tuesday after they showed signs of the disease.

The health ministry said most of the deaths were caused by enterovirus 71, commonly known also as EV-71, which causes hand, foot and mouth disease that can lead to paralysis and brain swelling or even death.

It also has been reported that the hardest hit provinces include the following, Anhui, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Beijing. Hebei, Jiangsu, Hunan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Jiangxi and Henan provinces and Chongqing.
