The Hamilton General Hospital will receive $35 million from the federal government to partially fund a new $91 million cardiovascular disease research center.

The medical facility plans to use the funds to bring in top caliber researchers and strengthen Hamilton as a major world-renowned cardiovascular research center, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said during a three-day visit to Ontario.

The money will be provided by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. The remainder of the cost of the new research institute will be shouldered by Hamilton Health Science and other groups.

When completed, the cardiovascular research center could employ 500 researchers and staff and create 230 new jobs.

Hamilton General Hospital is part of the Hamilton Healthcare System, which includes a major rural health facility, a special care clinic and a wellness center.
