With more and more cases of the deadly H5N1 bird virus being confirmed worldwide, nations are starting to develop defense plans. Each move is an effort to limit the spread of bird flu. The latest case was confirmed in a parrot in Britain, a first for that region.

In Peru, health officials from six Andean nations met Friday to coordinate a regional contingency plan.

Mexico is designating $55 million to stockpile drugs and help develop a vaccine, amongst other preventive measures. Mexico's health secretary says officials are preparing in case of a global pandemic.

China's government news agency reports the country's biggest city, Shanghai, is sterilizing the soles of shoes worn by arriving travelers.

Hong Kong is reportedly considering sealing its border with mainland China if bird flu starts spreading from human to human.

More promising is Hungary's health minister's recent report that tests with a vaccine against a strain of the bird flu virus show it to be "100 percent effective" in humans.

The United States, France, Britain and Germany are also working on developing their own vaccines.
