Under the program, an estimated seven million children under the age of five, will be vaccinated against measles throughout this year. At least 60,000 health workers have been tapped for the campaign which will be implemented in three phases.
Government figures say the junta has introduced a nationwide immunization against measles annually since 1987. An estimated six million children were vaccinated since the program was launched.
A study made by the United Nations Children's Fund have shown measles is responsible for the high mortality of children under five years old in Myanmar.
The nation's Ministry of Health said that an estimated 1.3 million children are born in the country every year and between 20 1n 25 percent fail to get vaccinated.
The ministry is calling on parents to send their children to health clinics to get vaccination shots, and added even remote and hardly accessible villagers were also being targeted in the program.
Authorities said, measles cases are found increasing among children, especially in those areas where there is low immunization coverage.
