San Diego based company Allerca has successfully bred the world's first hypoallergenic cat for those people who are prone to the sniffles and are allergic to cats.

One such hypoallergenic cat Joshua is an 18 month old. He is one of the second generations of allergy-free cats to be bred by the company Allerca GD, who is playful and affectionate, and fully hypoallergenic.

Reuters quotes company spokesman Stephen May as saying, "There's really a need. One of the primary reasons that cats are unfortunately given up for adoption or go to shelters is because people are really highly allergic."

Such cats will be available to you at a price of around Ł2'500 ($4,750) but the stock would be less and the buyer would have to wait as long as three years. Though the cats went on sale in 2004, but owing to its slow breeding they are not readily available.

Allerca breds them on low levels of the allergy causing protein Fel d1, which causes red eyes and runny noses for their owners when present in their saliva, urine or dander. The Company also confirmed that these cats are bred naturally, and there has been no genetic modification of any of the cats.

But animal rights groups are protesting the move saying these cats will be prone to health problems later in life, such as deafness, blindness, physical deformities, and a host of other ailments.
