Beef Recall Widens As Listeria Outbreak Kills 1, Sickens 16 In Canada

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) reported Wednesday the first fatality from the deadly bacteria Listeria monocytogenes while 16 people in four provinces suffered listeriosis.

The outbreak is not yet linked to a contaminated batch of roast and corned beef ordered recalled last week by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). But Maple Leaf Consumer Foods, supplier of Sure Slice brand packaged beef, expanded the recall to include its other ready-to-eat deli meats manufactured since June 2. Warning Out Against Listeria-Tainted Beef In Canada

Eating roast beef and corned beef with Maple Leaf Consumer Foods labels may be dangerous to your health, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIC) warned Monday.

One-kilogram packages of Sure Slice Roast Beef with a best-before date of Aug. 9 and Sure Slice Corned Beef with an expiration date of Aug. 23 have already been recalled by Maple Leaf from restaurants, hospitals and nursing homes, but the CFIC is taking extra precautions with its alert after listeria bacteria was found in the meat products

Mad Cow Disease Reported In Alberta

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Friday that it has confirmed Canada's 14th case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy or mad cow disease.

CFIA said in a statement that the mad cow disease was found in a six-year-old beef cow in Alberta, according to the Canadian Press

Whole Foods Recalls Fresh Ground Beef Following Reports Of Illness

Whole Foods Market has announced a voluntary beef recall Friday because of concerns the meat might be contaminated with E. coli bacteria. The beef was sold between June 2 and Aug. 6 and was processed at Nebraska Beef plant, said a company spokesperson.

Health authorities have confirmed seven cases of E. coli infection linked to ground beef, all involving people who bought beef from Whole Foods. Five of those people have been hospitalized

FDA Advises Consumers: Avoid Eating Maine Lobster Tomalley

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday advised consumers against eating tomalley or liver in lobsters after it was found to be contaminated with dangerous levels of the toxins.

The soft, green substance or tomalley found in the body cavity of lobsters can cause paralytic shellfish poisoning. The warning applies to American lobster, also known as Maine lobster, which is harvested in Atlantic waters from Canada to South Carolina
