The federal government approves Massachusetts' new universal health insurance program, the first of its kind in the country.

The state will continue to receive $385 million annually for the next two years. The program is expected to help 500,000 people obtain affordable insurance.

Gov. Mitt Romney signed the health care measure in April. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services had been reviewing the law since then.

The approval means the state can now implement the health care program, which will add 100,000 of the poorest people to federal Medicare rolls. Another 200,000 uninsured people will get help in buying low-cost health insurance.

Gov. Mitt Romney says in a statement, "Our ability to now insure every Massachusetts citizen is a historic achievement for both the commonwealth and the nation."
