Scientists discover that even very low doses of radiation can expose human being to the risk of cancer or other health hazards.

The National Academy of Sciences claims it has scientific evidence to prove the theory. A panel comprised of eminent scientists also say every type of radiation is harmful.

Analysts say the revelation by the National Academy of Sciences will definitely force government agencies to rethink on their radiation policies for abandoned nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons production facilities. However, the nuclear industry and some scientists have contested the National Academy of Sciences findings.

Opponents say there is a certain segment of very low-level radiation that is not harmful at all, calling the claims exaggerated.

Richard R. Monson, panel chairman and a professor of epidemiology at Harvard's School of Public Health disagrees, "The scientific research base shows that there is no threshold of exposure below which low levels of ionized radiation can be demonstrated to be harmless or beneficial. The availability of new and more extensive data has strengthened confidence" of the panel to go ahead with the revelation.
